The ‘counterfeit’ school safety bill HB-111 needs to be stopped. Contact the education committee this morning Friday the 14th and encourage them to kill HB-111.

This wrongly named “school safety and security bill” will create 48 different gun regulatory zones in Wyoming — creating a patchwork of different rules and regulations as you drive from one school district to another.

HB-111 is one of those bills that has the greatest of intentions, but the text of the bill (pg5, line 16) is direct assault on the state preemption. The preemption is what stops a patchwork of gun laws across the state.

This bill is a can of worms!

By delegating new powers to 48 school districts — it will become impossible — to repeal school gun free zones in the future.

As far as what this bill says, it does the opposite…it’s like it was 20 years ago, with the Right to Keep and Bear Arms under the direct control of a bureaucrats.

This bill will create a new permission slip system and a highly regulated privilege under the scrutiny of the anti-gunners. All because this legislation was drafted based on the antiquated ‘may issue’ language of yesteryear.

I will even go as far to say that the bill sponsor, John Eklund (R-Laramie) had no idea of what he is doing. But there is the chance that he intentionally let the lawyers work their gun control magic in this bill. You can decide.

Here are some of the other dangers in HB-111:

*** All law enforcement within the district will be notified of the person who receives special permission to carry.

***The school board shall maintain the locations and names of those granted permission to carry.

*** The district superintendent shall notify the parents about the person who is granted special permission to carry.

*** This bill sets ‘minimum’ standards, meaning that with the preemption change the local school districts can make even more restrictions and gun control.

*** By tapping the preemption clause the school district will be empowered to ban all weapons if they wish.

*** HB-111 if passed will make it impossible to repeal the gun free zones in schools.

Please contact the following committee members this morning before noon, and ask them to shoot down this dangerous legislation that turns the right to self defense — into a tedious permission slip process — in 48 different school districts across Wyoming.
